ANU Visual Arts Graduation Exhibition Submission 2021

This is a selection of my visual art process diary (VAPD), a research tool used to flesh out my graduating project. My personal process is  stubbornly more research and conceptually driven than experimental so notes from articles and journal-like summaries of my thoughts feature more heavily than sketches. I have also documented how I learned to create augmented reality experiences.

Left, an augmented reality enhanced video I created to animate my tattoo.

These are the first two augmented reality sketches I created in Adobe Aero. They use some png illustrations I quickly drew in procreate to create a little oasis scene. The left uses my bedroom floor as the anchor for the scene while the right uses the cover of my notebook as an image anchor, so when the camera scans the notebook the scene will appear. This is the technique I go on to use in my final project.

A screen cap of my workflow in Adobe Animate. I used a picture of my painting as the background so I could layer the digital drawings I created in procreate over the top. I hand drew each animated element. Some parts, like the girl in the blue coat (above), use a puppetry technique where I drew her arm seperate to her body and then animated her limb in animate. For other parts such as the coffee steam I drew each frame individually and then just turned them into a GIF in animate.

After this I imported all the animations into Adobe Aero and using my paintings as the target image anchor created the final AR work.

A collage of reference images for my paintings. I printed it out and sliced in into the 'instagram' grid pattern. I needn't of though because I ended up painting across two panels and cutting them into indivudal squares later.
